The Leipzig/Halle airport is now in third place in Germany after Frankfurt/Main and Cologne/Bonn with respect to cargo. The 24/7 operations for cargo flights are convincing – a new European hub has been created in the centre of Germany.
Leipzig/Halle airport
- New European hub: number 3 in Germany after Frankfurt/Main and Cologne/Bonn
- Unrestricted 24/7 operations, 365 days a year for air freight
- Parallel takeoff and landing runway system (3,600 m long, CAT IIIb in both directions, no restrictions) – i.e. planes can land at the airport in all weather conditions
- Tri-modal hub which optimally links rail, road and air transport with each other: motorway junction A 9/ A 14 and links to mainline and freight railways
- weekly freight flights; direct flights to Asia, USA and Eastern Europe by:
- DHL
- Lufthansa Cargo (with its own cargo handling in the World Cargo Center at the airport)
- Aerologic,a joint-venture between DHL Express and Lufthansa Cargo with brand-new Boeing 777 freighters for airfreight and express goods service from and to Asia and North America, currently four aircraft, by the end of 2010 eight aircraft
- Prospectively, air freight coming from overseas shall be transported over distances of up to 400 km using freight railway transportation
Magdeburg/Cochstedt airport
- Unrestricted 24 hour operations, 365 days a year
- Border crossing point and customs airport for the European Union
- 84 ha sized industrial and commercial area, 29 ha of this space in front field areas with direct access to the runway
